i was just given a 96 d1 i was told it ran before it was parked but i would like to verify the engine/trans before i decide what to do with it.

what is the best way to hear it run?? buy a key? (how much?) knock out the ignition? hot wire??

Considering it was a FREE vehicle. Call a locksmith. They will be able to make a key on the spot (<$100.00). Additionally, it's the same key for the doors. The key itself is ~$5.00.
