    2004 and newer Disco

    Hello folks,
    I just sold my Series Dormobile and am thinking of getting a Discovery II SE (2004 or newer) When you read the reviews of non-Landrover folks out there the comments are awful. That notwithstanding, are you folks happy with yours...what kind of problems are reoccurring. Thanks a lot. Oh, are they better than Freelanders?

          Good Vehicle

          I owned a 95 Disco I for about two years than bought the 03 Disco II and have owned it for almost seven years now (got it at the end of 02). I loved both of these vehicles. They have never left me stranded. Granted that I take good care of them. They stink on gas mileage, and it hurt last summer when it almost took $100 to fill the tank (they need premium). Have had some issues with some sensors (oxygen, oil pressure, wheel speed). Nothing that I could not handle myself and like I said, it never stranded me. The door regulator went on the passenger side on the 03 but that was a pretty easy replacement also. You don't want to go into the dealer and give them a blank check, you'll go broke fast. All in all I love my truck, and the 03 rides a lot smoother and quiter than the 95.... Don't have any info on the freelander (other than they look too small in my opinion).... Good Luck!

              2000 Discovery II.
              I love it since day1 for nine years now with proper maintenance/care.

              It drinks gas and not a comforty for grocery shopping driving but

                  If my '01 D2 bit the dust, I'd get an '04 D2 in a heartbeat.

                      I have Discovery II 2000, it has 102 000. It is my every day car. It not the car you going to buy if you concern about gas prizes. When gas was at $4 it cost me more than $80 for a full tank. The benefits: I live in NY in winter time I don't have to dig out; the car is very stable no matter where you drive; relative easy to maintain, parts can purchased online and if you handy you can replace it yourself; of course the look, the car is look like no other, it has personality and beauty ; lastly driver has a good observation due to the way windows are positioned and so are the passengers my 2 years daughter loves to ride.
                      Another drawback is most parts cost a lot. If my DII dies, the next one would 2004.
                      The other thought as any car DII needs to be properly maintained.

                          I've got an '04 Discovery. It's the S model = No sunroofs, base sound system, no armrests, no leather, no fog lamps or headlamp washers, no color keyed bumpers...........Basic

                          I bought it late '04.
                          Have added 2 1/2 inch spring lift, 265/75R-16 BFG TA tires, trimmed the front bumper, replaced rear bumper with home built douglas fir version, added some homebuilt sliders and skid plates for steering and fuel tank, chopped bottom 3 inches off of rear quarter panels........

                          That said, I typically get 17-18 mpg on highways, 10-15 mpg off-road.
                          I now have 80,000 miles on it with no problems except for re-sealing a leaky transfer case. This truck has completed 107 serious off-road treks and spends more than 1/3 of its time off-road.

                          The '04 was the last year for the Discovery and they finally had all of the bugs out of it. It came with the 4.6 liter V8 (plenty of power), an improved electronic traction control system (4ETC), they put the center differential locker back in it (CDL), and it's the last year for a front and rear solid axle system in the US....

                          Note that the '05 Discovery 3/LR3 is a totally different, non-related vehicle.

                          My personal view: This is the best vehicle that Land Rover ever built for people who actually use them for off-road exploring. Some might argue for the Defender but that has not been available in North America for 12 years now.....

                                  We love our 04, it definitely was my "gateway drug" to other Land Rovers. Comfy on road and great off-road, many may argue but IMHO 04 was the best "all-around" Disco.

                                      bmohan55 - What type/size tires do you have on your '04 as it looks like some pretty deep mud in that picture for stock tires.
