My 2004 Disco 2 will reach the mark of 90,000 miles, I need to begin changing the oil myself. What grade and brand should I use?

Oil
My 99 DII has 120k, 40k in the last year alone. My advice is to use a synthetic motor oil specifically designated High Mileage, as they have seal swell agents to help prevent leaks. My personal choice is Mobil 1 10W-40 High Mileage, as I have seen a dramatic increase in fuel economy and a decrease in wear. No leaks, either, and very little oil burn off. I add 1/3 qt. every 3k, as opposed to conventional oil where I added close to 1 full qt.
I also use Mobil 1 75W-90 for the transfer case & f/r diffs. Replaced them last week after 40k, still the same color as new. Virtually no wear. I had a leak in the transfer case, lost almost all the fluid. What came out looked like molasses, but Mobil 1 allowed for zero damage. I should know, I watched it get disassembled & put back together.
If you dont use a synthetic high mileage oil, it will not protect as well, and it may leak. In the 10W-40 grade, only Mobil 1 does. If you prefer conventional, try Mobil Clean 5000 High Mileage. -

If you use synthetic oil, make sure you use a high quality oil filter too. There have been a lot of discussions on this, and if you use the search feature, I'm sure you will find them. Use a Wix filter, or a Napa Gold. Never use Fram. The synthetic oils can remain in your engine for 7,000 or more between oil changes, so you need a high end filter to ensure you aren't recirculating any metal filings, or dirt.Bad gas mileage gets you to some of the greatest places on earth.Comment
