    loud pinging? when starting

Just bought used Disco II from friend 3 weeks ago was told just had oil change(assumed all fluids filled my bad!). Has a 1 drip of oil a day on drive way. Any way went on a 150 mile trip(usally check for long trips but thought hey was told etc...) over the Grapevine(cailfornia I5 north of L.A.) any way car started to over heat and making loud pinging sounds so stopped. no sign of over heating prior or oil light on. Towed to local truck stop found totally out of radiator fluid and seemed to have no oil. So filled it up and seems to be ok when running just small pinging when reveing up speed and real loud when statrting cold but only for a few seconds. What could be the problem? would a cleaner maybe help. Have Disco I that waterpump blew and same thing, just refilled and replaced pump added a cleaner of some kind for pistons? now no ping. Help! dont want expensive repair bill as I'm taking in for ABS and the Amigo lights repair.

I'm not sure, but notice that when I start and shift into drive right away it stops the loud pinging. Otherwise sound goes away on own few seconds anyway.

I believe DII's are also known for having oil pump issues. Perhaps your's is on it's way out.
