Hello I've been lurking on this site for a while and finally jumped in. I used to own a series 1 Disco and it proved to be as dependable as a stone hammer.. That is if you depended on it to burn gas and smoke alternators! Well I guess I didn't learn my lesson because I'm hot on the trail of a Series II. Thanks in advance for the help and if anyone in the Greater Boston area can give me advice on where to go to learn more I would appreciate it.

Any particular reason you want a series 2 and not a 2A or 3?

No I would be happy with a 2, 2a or 3. I actully think the one I'm looking at is a 2a. It has the typical frame rot and bulkhead issues. I need to inspect it more closely to see if the frame is salvageble or not. If I can fix it with some repair plates I'll go for it (price is pretty cheap). If not I'll keep looking for something in my price range (around $3000) that has a frame that is not totally gone.

To me the 2A is the ultimate expression of Land Rover-ness. When they put the headlights in the wings it was all over. They have only made it worse since.

OK, we've established that you're 'one of us' and not after one of those fancy SUV type things.
Twos have a lot of unique drivetrain differences making some parts replacement problematic (without hair pulling searches)
I've had a plethora of 2As and a half dozen or so series 3s, and I too lean towards the 2A, though having had headlights in the breakfast grew a bit long in the tooth eventually. I never liked bugeyes, but I'm in the minority. I guess 69-71 are my preference. I only have a '73 88 now, other than my Defender, and the 3 has sort of grown on me. If it were a rat, that might not have happened, but it is a really nice truck and aged well, with under 30k.
I have refined my refusal criteria down to bulkhead mainly. The nice thing about finding a solid, straight panel truck with a bad frame, is that if you do a re-frame, and don't rush it, the pocket book pain can be spread out, making it (this is the part you tell your wife, or other significant critic) affordable.
You will know your truck as well as is ever necessary after doing a reframe.

You are not too far from me. I have a series 3 in my barn that is my baby. If you would like to come up some weekend please pm me. Also ther is a 2a 109 down the road . The owner is a nut case but the truck looks sound.
