    Ah, you did well noticing that halfway through. I usually realize things like that at the end, and then forget about them next time I do the job!

      I think Rover owners are more in tune with their vehicles, and the faintest new sound is picked up much sooner than it would be if you were driving a more modern vehicle. It sounds like you caught the U-joint wear quite early, as you noticed some play while moving the driveshaft, but the ujoints appeared tight when you removed them. Did you check the wheel bearings also?
