Spare Tire Carrier - Rear Door

The illustration of the spare tire carrier (rear door) on our hosts webpage shows a U bolt and a retaining ring...are both required? or is the retaining ring to replace the u bolt which appears to be NLA?

They work in conjunction with each other. The "U-Bolt" supports the weight of the wheel assembly while you struggle to line up the holes and the backing plate is where the tightening force is applied to hold the wheel assembly in place longitudinally.
