I always kept mine on the bonnet as I needed all the load space in the bed.
109 pickups also had one on the side in the bed, which fit in a recess.
On 109 regulars there was an opening on each side of the bed (in the side bench so the wheel oriented front to rear) The tyre would be fitted to the side behind the driver so as not to interfere with the rear view. The other side would get a plate riveted over the hole unless the truck was ordered with mounts on both sides for 2 spare tyres. The 88 inside mount was across the back of the seat bulkhead in the centre of the vehicle.
Interestingly enough Teriann my 88 was a s/w and had the inside mount, with the deluxe interior. And the bonnet mount. Of course after so many years it is always difficult to know what was original and what has been done...

Many North American 88s had mounts for 3 spares.

Mine has all 3 mounts as well. (not real sure why, but I just figured it was a "Rover thing" )
I suspect it had more to do with the quality of tyre side walls when the trucks were new and what options the customer ordered. But is is fairly unusual to see a stationwagon with an internal mounted spare because it interfered with the stationwagon seating.
Maybe it was a "just in case" thing. The spare was mounted on the back door when I got it. The bulkhead and bonnet mounts both look like a spare had never been mounted in either position though they both had the requisite hardware in place. Who knows
