My Petro Thinks it's a Diesel

My 109 SW 73 2.25 petro use to have this bad habit of dieseling after driving it. I had forgotten about that as it was in the shed undergoing a major restoration (body) over the past two years. Now that I'm driving it again, I noticed the dieseling. I'm not a mechanic. I've heard the most likely cause is timing but is this correct? Also, I'm not sure how to adjust the timing on it. The last time I did any timing work was with a friend 40 years ago. I remember us using caulk and a strobe light. Any advice? So what causes dieseling?

What are you running for a carb? I had this problem with my Weber until Les suggested that I purchase a fuel shutoff solenoid from our hosts. Problem solved.

In my experience it's always been some combination of mixture & engine temp. Once you've shut of the ignition you shouldn't be getting spark, so timing should be irrelevant though it can influence engine temps. A fuel shutoff would fix it, but it seems like you're just masking the real problem that way.
