    What does the Lever Do?

I have a IIa 88 1964. Has a sideways movement lever in center low dash. Notches for positions. What is this? Is it normal equipment? What position should it be in when driving? Thank you. (novice)

I'm assuming that you are talking about the manual throttle control.
While one is fitted to my 88, I don't really use it. It's my understanding is that it is primarily used when operating PTO equipment - to maintain engine speed (if not, I'm sure to be corrected).

It is also used to increase the output of the alternator when heavily loading the battery for jump starts and winching, or to allow slightly higher revs when idling while the vehicle is cold, or as a really dangerous cruise control.

Thank you very much. This forum is much cheaper than a manual. I am cheap, thrifty I like to say.

No substitute for the manual. It's referred to as the "Green Bible" for a reason.

Mine is white but that's beside the point. What he needs first is the owners manual. Telling you what the knobs do is just a small part of the manual. The manual also lists the factory recommended service items and intervals then provides step by step instructions on how to carry out each service item. The workshop manual does not go into tuneups & regular service items. The factory put all that stuff in the owners manual along with the wiring diagrams for that year LR.

I scanned and released into the wild a pdf workshop manual a few years ago. I can't remember if it is a Chilton or Haynes or something else. It has some before pictures of my SIII in the first few pages as filler. If you can find it online somewhere, it's better than nothing - pretty good actually, but no bible.

Here's a link from the days of yore about manuals. You can probably find the one I scanned as well as others by some clicking action:

That lever operates the james bond ejection seat.
