    1963 Series IIa Overdrive Screams

Reading the other thread on the OD, I have some questions and did not want to hijack or alter the direction of that thread.

I bought this truck two years ago and with just finishing a massive home renovation I have not had time to really engage with the truck, just throwing parts at it to keep it running until I can dedicate some time to learn more about it. Right now, I just need it to get my wife and I back and forth to the beach with the dogs.

So my OD screams when engaged, so I just never use it. I think I want to pull it, and from reading some of the threads there appears to be a way to remove it, install some sort of plate, and keep driving the truck so I can put the OD in line with all the other repairs that I need to do.

Can someone please enlighten me on the removal procedure as well as the "plate" that I need to purchase so I can continue to drive the truck?

There is a plate that goes on the back of the transmission/ transfer case and a gear that need to go back in.

Not sure what they are specifically called but a call into our hosts should get you the info you need - as well as the parts!

      I just PM'ed you.

      You basically need
      - the end cap/cover for the gearbox
      - rear mainshaft gear
      - locking washer rear mains shaft (mates to the mainshaft gear)
      - mainshaft nut
      - gasket

watch this video. While this is for the Global Roamer overdrive, the part where he gets into attaching the overdrive to the transfer case gives you an idea as to what you need to remove/install.

Is it a big deal to rebuild the OD?

Check it for oil? 90w open the middle seat base and pull the dipstick near the left side, fill to line.

Easy enough to rebuild.....if you can get the parts.
              What brand do you have?

Low on oil, still whines but not as bad. It's a Fairey OD. Should these make any noise at all???

It is my understanding that the Fairey OD units have straight cut gears and that they typically whine pretty good, at least mine does. As long as it seems to be working fine and is topped up with oil, I would not worry too much about it. I don't know of anyone who sells a full rebuild kit. Several places sell new coupling sleeve overhaul kit, since the coupling sleeves wear out relatively easily, but I don't think the coupling sleaves have much impact on whining noise these ODs are known for.

Here's a link to a good blog post on a Fairey rebuild: http://www.nickslandrover.co.uk/overdrive-overhaul/

                      Excellent info, thank you.

I way overfilled it, as I just removed the top plate and filled it up!, I'm just going to let it blow it out the vent hole. I'd like to run a vent line from the hole to a container, how are you guys connecting the vent line to the hole in the cover plate?

I don't run a line, just fill to mark on dip stick. Everything else leaks down there anyway, get used to it. Because of this it is a good thing to check fluid levels regularly, especially the overdrive.
                        Cheers,
                        Rob

It's screaming because a bearing is on its way out. It will eventually get so bad that you won't want to use it. That's a design feature that prevents it from friction welding itself into a useless lump.
Stephen Peters at Safari HP in FL has all the replacement parts for the Fairey. Bearings, however, are easily sourced via cross reference.

Once I added gear oil, it no longer screams, but it does whine. Not sure how to tell what is normal and what is not with regards to the noise.

Fairey overdrives self destruct. It's just how they are. It'll happen sooner or later. If it is noisy, then sooner. You should gather the parts that will allow you to remove it and return to stock, and keep those handy in the truck somewhere. It's not a huge deal to remove a failed unit and put the gear and rear cover (533731) back. Been done on the side of the road a gazillion times. You need the weird spanner jimmy (600300) for the castellated nut (217477)
