Broken Shift Lever.....Advice on the install???

I recently picked up a 73 Series III and it had a broken shift lever (along with lots of other broken stuff). I got the shifter out all & good but now for the life of me cant get the circlip back into the housing. I keep messing with it and getting close with the spring pushed in but cant get it to go.

Has anyone run into this issue?

    Thank!

I seem to remember that I used a big socket to press it down. I don't remember it as much of an issue. Sorry.

And, conversely, I recall it being a moderate pain in the butt, but don't remember how I dealt with it. I know the problem can be overcome using common tools, though.

Got it figured out.... I was using the wrong circlip pliers. It was still a pain in the butt, yet much easier. Thanks!
