    layshaft bearing

The green Bible says to warm the case and use a dead blow hammer to knock the inner race out of the case. The question is how hot can you get the case w/o damaging it?

I guess it's down to when does "warm" transfer into "hot" ? A gentle warm with a blow torch should do, just to expand the alloy of the case.

Spot on, you should never warm/heat it enough to change color, get it hot, but not enough to blue, or red. That's way too far.
