I have a fuel starvation issue still, after changing all the fuel lines and cleaning the draw tube, so I’m installing a new pump. When fitting it how do I know when the actuator is properly in contact with the camshaft? And should I not put the sedimenter on until the pump is installed?

A simple trick is to spread some grease on the lever of the pump - install and bump the engine over with the starter - remove and look at wipe pattern from engine on grease on lever. If you bought the correct pump there shouldn't be an issue with contact, but... -
My mechanic installed an electrical fuel pump between the mechanical pump and the gas tank. Another mechanic did the same a few years ago and it too failed. Ideally I would install the electric pump and bypassed the mechanical, yet I am told enelectric pump won't draw gas from the tank. It only PUSHES the gas, so how can an electric pump work?
And yes, I would love to find a mechanic in Southwestern CT who KNOWS series Landys.Comment

If you have a Std. pump it can also be actuated manually so you can see if it works on the bench. I'd put some vacuum on the fuel supply and insure you pull fuel. then bench test the pump. and as mentioned by biffidum above get the pump in there right. Other things i've seen: fuel tank vacuumized, check valves in pump installed wrong, leaking sediment bowl, testing fuel pump with the hand lever but the cam has the pump in full stroke position, and many more. yes, put the sediment bowl on there while on the bench to ensure it is a good fit.
any positive displacement pump will get fuel out of the tank, it isn't that far away and the bottom of the tank is about even with the pump, Land rover pumps don't have to work very hard. I'm considering an electric model since the original Land rover pumps are hard to find and the rebuild kits available don't fit the original pump.Comment

Thank you to all who have offered a solution to my fuel starvation problems. Ultimately, I installed a low pressure electric pump, had a block off plate made to fit it where the mechanical pump was.
On another note, I tried to ask for assistance finding a part for my S2A petrol. One fellow found a part that does"t exist on a Series, another had the same problem. What happened to the guys who knew Series Landys? There are a couple I can trust to understand me but I get the feeling the company has hired people who aren't as well informed as they should be.Comment

few accessible people know series land rovers anymore. Forums are the best bet, that and a factory manual. Finding a wrencher who'll pay attention to the book is another story.

a centrifugal pump won't create any vacuum in air, a positive displacement will. I'd buy a quality pump (electric) from Summit or similar and probably carry a el cheapo spare under the seat! Overhaul kits for original pumps were sold for many years, maybe Blanchard has them? The originals lasted for years and the manually activated pump lever on the bottom was often a help. There's nothing wrong with a electric but I have struggled home with a battery so low it'd hardly run above a idle and certainly would not of made it spending the amps on a electric pump. Any electric pump should be installed as close to the tank as possible and preferably lower than the top of the tank. On a '88this is in the mud by the foot well though it'll be ok no further downstream than the original pump location. the photo is called "hauling bentonite into high ditch"
