    Distributer gear grub screw

1972 series 3 88 - just tried to install the spin on oil filter assembly . the grub screw for the distributor that sits in the oil filter block unit does not sit flush with the new gasket surface . Is the grub screw designed to sit flush ? Rig has no problem with setting the timing or dwel

i'll be watching this post because I wouldn't mind having the spin on. I do have it on the S2, I've never driven nor changed the oil though but i gather no one had a issue with it.
how far above the surface does it protrude?

The grub screw protrudes about 1/8 of an inch from the flat surface With the stock filter assembly there is space that makes it work . The new spin on filter adapter has a flat matting service .- FYI do not remove the grub screw as it hold the distributer shaft gear in place . I learned the hard way . Any help would be great . Maybe my grub screws is not the correct length or is not seated in enough . Thanks for any replies .

The grub screw on our 2.25 sat below the level of the block and so no issue when I installed the spin on adapter. However there was a serious oil leak from the grub screw area with the adapter installed that required a significant glop pf the Right Stuff gasket goop to seal.

Make sure you install the adapter in the correct orientation, as the wrong way will prevent lubrication and damage the bearings. Most oil filters have an anti drain back function that prevents reverse flow thru the filter.

Thanks for the replies . Was trying to find the correct length of the grub screw to make sure the previous owner did not install the wrong one . I am sure a few people have installed the spin on filter assembly and did not have the same problem as me . Or just buy a new one to compare . Thanks again for your help.

pull the distributor, hold the gear with a magnet or something and pull that screw out ....... I don't see another way to deal with it. i doubt even the factory "green bible" specifies that length.

Update - all fixed . Took the distributor gear out and reset it. The previous owner did not have the grub screw that holds gear in the correct place ( reassess on the gear bush) . I must admit proper installation was a real challenge . Follow the Hanes book and read all the forums on the subject . Thank goodness for being able to use the front bumper as a step to reach over the engine . My wife reminded me I was working on my Landi all day . I just smiled .

Thx for the follow up, sometimes we never learn what the fix turned out to be. Land Rover, turning drivers into mechanics for 75 years!!, I saw this recently watching canadians with 3 land rovers make their way to cape town. They were always fixing something and in one scene a guy they commented on was watching elephants at sunset with his TOYOTA in the back ground!! hahahah I doubt a series 2 or 3 would of had most of the issues they dealt with. They were driving some nice Rovers, newer ones.
