I just want to know where the rotor points to when it's on number 1 cylinder, I've been trying to do the tappets and add electronic Ignition, it won't start, it did when I got it briefly, I did a lot of fiddling and I'd just like know that one thing, I'm probably in panic mode but I just want to be sure I'm not off, there's not much help out there on these and it's been a learning experience

I cannot help with the direct question but unless you have taken the distributer drive gear out of the engine, the distributer will only fit back in with the rotor arm in the same position as when it came out, when the engine has no. 1 cylinder at top dead centre . There is an offset dog in the coupling to the distributer , so it will only fit one way . One has of course got to make sure No one cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke . The LR workshop manual is showing the vacuum advance diaphagm pointing towards the front of the engine at this point .and the rotor arm pointing the same way, but that may not be definate. Presumably the supplier of the electronic ignition gives instruction for basic timing set up.Hopefully someone with a 6 cylinder came give more definate advise -
Thanks for the pointers, there's a procedure to use a timing light to find #1 spark timing in the instructions, but wouldn't you know it my old Sears timing light is kaput, new one on the way, the odyssey continuesComment
