    Checking spark plugs

I have a couple questions about checking spark plugs. I removed one today with a socket wrench and broke the end off, and I'd like to avoid doing that again. What's the best tool? This one was pretty tight. The other question is how to interpret the appearance. By looking online, my guess is that this one is fouled with oil, but I'm not sure. Here are some photos:

they look better than mine! the best tool is the 6 point socket with the rubber in the top end. If you install new plugs tighten just enough to smash the collapsable washer and i always put some hi temp copper coat on the threads too.
