LHD Carpet template?

Has anyone replaced their front carpeting using a DIY template or otherwise? Mine is a LHD '73 Series III "88, but the "premium" kit is expensive and considering trying to do something on my own. Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

carpeting? i've done some rubber matts that i wish i'd of left alone, the tunnel i find near impossible. good luck.

I've used cardboard cut to ft to and used it as a template but I don't use carpet on the floors as it retains moisture and my feet can be very muddy.... I cut my own rubber floor mats using a diamond plate rubber mat from McMaster-Carr. I do have a small section of carpet that covers the trans hump.

I have NOS GLR carpets in stock (R & L) and we do our own gearbox tunnel covers in Hardura.....both 4 & 6-cylinder, but not sure what's still on the shelf.

Not sure if you’ve bought the carpet kit yet, but in case it helps anyone else - here’s one template I made for a recent carpet update I did:

[ Bulkhead Carpet ]
The template attached is for the carpet section that covers the bulkhead, between the footwells. It’s the same for LHD as RHD as the bulkhead is the same there. This was traced from an existing piece of carpet I took out and adjusted to fit my Series 3. Since the felt material has some give, and parts of it tuck under floor mats and the dashboard, you can be off about 1/8” to 1/4” and it still fits. Probably more.

For my project, I bought 1/8” thick felt upholstery by the yard from Amazon, along with 1/8” thick insulating foam that was adhesive backed. My original carpet was about 1/4” thick. I had trouble finding 1/4” thick felt on Amazon, and figured I’d want to add sound-deadening foam behind it anyway. I wanted to match the original depth, so I decided to sew the foam and felt together for an overall equal 1/4” thickness. I ended up sandwiching the foam between two felt panels and edge stitched (with the “Z” stitch overlapping the edge to finish off the frayed felt). I cut the foam panels 1 inch undersized all around and adhered them to the felt. My regular consumer-grade sewing machine had trouble going through the foam and advancing the foot, so that’s why I cut the foam back 1 in away from the seams - so I only had to sew through 1/4” of felt. I also did some stitches down the bends so everything would lay down nice. My original carpet was held in by adhesive glue that long ago failed and I didn’t want to use glue again. So, I got some neodymium permanent magnets about the size of a nickle on Amazon and sewed them into little pockets on the back side in the corners of the footwell flaps(4 total). It holds the carpet strongly and I can remove it easy for any cleaning or work.

The picture is me just test fitting them, so they’re not tucked in and smoothed out perfectly, but you get the idea. It actually looks great and only cost about $30 with spare felt and foam and magnets to make other panels if I wanted.

My gearbox hump carpet was still in good shape so I reused it. It covers the bottom edge to finish off the carpet. I could probably make a template for that, if people are interested.
