I need a new come-a-long and these seem to be about the best avail?

I was recently stuck in some snow w/o a winch (while plowing) and my no name brand come-a-long seemed to be a bit worn out.

I'm considering the 3 ton model 20 ft of cable.. comments, suggestions?

    Tirfor

The Tirfor is so much better. Its also way more expensive, but its stronger, safer, faster and more versitile.

I have used that type of come-along on the job for 20 plus years and they are OK and what I will carry in my Rover. For the money they are to best out there. You will need several lengths of straps or a good long chain as there never seems to be anything close to hook up to. I prefer the nylon straps to a chain as they are kinder to the tree you usually will hook up to in my part of the world. I have also used Grip Hoists on hiking trail construction projects and agree with Ike that they are superior but for a vehicle recovery tool they are just too expensive.

Check out the Black Rat hand winches. They are similar to Tirfors but a fraction of the cost. Sorry, no link but you should be able to Google them. There was an outfitter in CA that was selling them some time ago. Black Rat has been around for a while now and AFAIK are quite reputable.

Here is some good info on that Black Rat winch.

I used this type when i was going through a Duncan 4X4 course in Africa, they work really well, but you will need extra straps, chain, and even a winch extention cable or 2.

Thanks for the info... These alternate unit do look quite nice. Though more $$'s than I anticipated. I'm not looking to replace my winch, but upgade my current come-a-long. I had seen that style used in the LRO magazines but never new they were avail in the US.
In my sutuation either the winch or the plow can be on the front of my reuck, but not at the same time and 9 times out of ten. I need a rear pull to get me free if stuck while plowing snow. Thanks again!

If you need a come-along the Wyeth Scott ones are the ones to get. FAR better than the regular commercial ones you see at farm stores etc. The Tirfor style is a lot better but if you are familiar with the Wyeth Scott type and only use them in the situations you are used to then go ahead and get one- it will do ok.
