A friend of mine pulled the head off his '63 to find the source of the diminished power he was experiencing. The head gasket between 2 and 3 was blown with about 3/4" worth of HG material being MIA. The truck sat for a decade and he recently fired it up. Low power, weird exhaust note... He suspects a faulty HG, corrosion due to lack of use, combined with a lack of a head re-torque for the failure. He'd planned to mill it to 8:1 anyway, but it has a pair of cracks to go along with the furrow between the two combustion chambers. The block survived with a little damage and probably won't need to be decked. Unfortunately, I didn't bid on the $80 head that was on ebay a few weeks ago.
So, anyone have a usable petrol head available on the cheap? He prefers an 8:1, but one without cracks or fire damage would be appreciated just as much. He just got married and doesn't have a lot of dosh to spend on this unexpected problem. Like me, he could use a good 2.25 petrol exhaust manifold as well.
Many thanks!
