Water cooled VW Vanagons came with a nice little auxiliary heater mounted to the floor
as did Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers in the latter years.

      Welcome to Maine, Gunny!

What town are you moving to? I live next to Portland, and the bay is just over the hill from me, which means that dampness is usually a bigger issue than are cold temps. If you live away from the ocean you will have more of the cold to contend with. In any case, an effective, functioning defroster is a handy thing to have. RHD mans that Mrs. Gunny gets the warm footwell. Great in the winter, but (as you know) not so great in the summer - and it can get hot here in June-August.
I have the stock under-hood Smiths heater and blower in my 1970 IIA and find it to be perfectly adequate. I know this doesn't answer your questions about how to fix your system, but it might help you determine what your needs are. I run a soft top year-round and even my wife isn't cold in it, so heat is not a huge issue, IMHO. Keeping the windscreen clear is more the key quality of life issue.

On another note, southern Maine has a very active (and friendly) LR Series enthusiast community, some of whom (like Pete, and me, for instance) post regularly on this site. Someone (Pete at the moment) always has a major project going, which is a great excuse to share parts and knowledge (and to get out of the house). Also, it is not uncommon to spot Jeff Aronson at odd-hours tooling through Portland on I-295 in QE1, hair blowing wildly in the slipstream and mystery-babe of the week in the next seat. Keeps things interesting.

Not too sure yet, i will be working out of Brunswick but they will be moving while i am there to Kittery so i am looking for a place in between. Its mainly for the stability of my wifes job, assuming she gets a transfer.

Saco or Southern Portland area is where i have been looking lately.

Looking forward to being up in that area, seems that there is quite a wealth of Series knowledge near by, and lots of seafood!

        Thanks!

Saco is a pretty nice little town. I just got married there and if you drive down Ferry road you might catch my 66' 88 parked at my Mom's. It is just before Garside's which is a great little ice cream place, slow service but great ice cream. Unfortunately that Rover sits too long between visits!
