    BSF Wrenches/Sockets

Well, I'm breaking down and buying afew BSF sockets/wrenches to supplement my normal American/metric stuff.

Please correct if I'm wrong, but where I'm reading about Whitworth wrenches, sockets, etc., I can assume these are the same as BSF wrenches??

I know there is a difference between pitch of the thread and # of threads between Whitworth and BSF, but in terms of getting a grip on a bolt, the terms Whitworth and BSF are interchangable right? I read somewhere that the tool measurements refer to shank diameter not head of the bolt or nut.

FYI, pricing I've seen is about $80 for 7 piece wrench set and $60 for 11 piece socket sets.

    This thread should be fun...

    ...get it? Thread?

I'll just post a conversion chart and let other explain the finer points of British engineering.

This table is the chart for publication of information of wrench sizes in inches (US) and millimeters (metric), as well as British spanner size information.

    Whitworth explained a bit more.

Amaze your friends and be the star of your next cocktail party.

      Thanks 4Flat.

      Article/conversion chart helpful. Particularly:

In effect, I believe that the only BSF/BSW sizes that you really need are: 1/8 BSW (3/16 BSF)
      1/4 BSW (5/16 BSF) !

Looks like I should save my money and keep using a crescent wrench.

Of course if they are BSF/BSW then they are not wrenches, they are spanners

            Putting it this way....

..after wrenching for 30 years....AND being a tool-a-holic who has to own the right stuff, I have never found a need for anything other than US or metric wrenches/sockets....

            Ever.
