Tailgate / liftgate Handles - Connecting interior to exterior

My Series II liftgate handles got pulled out and some parts were lost. I found some pieces, but not the rod that goes through the tailgate. So I ordered a new exterior handle assembly (#41 in the catalog - this comes with the rod attached to it), an inside handle (#31), finishing cap for handle (#32), and inside escutcheon (#34).

After screwing on the exterior handle assembly (with the rod through the tailgate), I slipped the 2 springs from the original inside handle inside the escutcheon and finishing cap and pressed the inside handle onto the new metal rod. Everything worked fine, but the inside handle slips right off the rod.

Any thoughts as to how I can affix the inside handle to the rod???

    Thanks,
    roversii

The handle is pinned to the rod. PM me your email address and I can send you a high res photo if you would like.
