    fuel sending unit lucas gremlin!

Heres the story ladies and gents:
    Series 3 109 1980 SW

Original one was in there and worked but with about 1/4 left in the tank it just E'd out and jumped around. I took it out and noticed the metal hairs that it reads .. some were broken so ok order a new one.

UPS man showed up to the door with a genuine land rover fuel sending unit.. 30 min install and a quick test and I can finally tell how much gas I have. I drive it for a week no problems. One morning I go crank it up and it reads Full really fast. The tank is not full.

    Troubleshooting:
Volt meter reads 11.x and varies but doesn't go over 12.
All new leads have been attached and new ground run.
Checked tank for obstruction and nothing... float does not hang.
Compared units and are identical. (old vs new)
Took it out of the tank and tested it IT WORKS!
Put it in the tank and it DOES NOT work. Reads Full

Anybody ever heard of this happening??! The orginal worked for 8 months until I replaced it. So it can't be anything in the dash due to the fact that the old one worked and the new one works outside of the tank.

    Voltage Stabilizer

The voltage stabilizer has probably gone kaput. It's suppose to regulate the voltage to IIRC a max of 10.5 VDC. It's usually located on the back side of the speedometer.
