Thanks. It's been a fun project, just took two years to get to it. The big hassle was finding the time and the having to travel clear across Toronto (usually in rush hour traffic) to my friends shop whenever I could work on it.

There are still a couple issues to work out. Need to get a relay and hook up the glow plugs. The temp gauge isn't working. Hopefully that is just a matter of swapping the sender for the original sender out of the 2.25 petrol engine. And for some crazy reason, when I switch the key off, the engine keeps running. But when I pull the wire off the stop solenoid, the engine stops. I used the coil wire for this function. Something odd going on there.

Hope to get over and finish everything off on Tuesday or Wednesday. Sure looking forward to the increased fuel mileage. That and I just dig the sound of a diesel Land Rovers. They sound... right.

Probably just the fuel solenoid not functioning which is giving you the shut down trouble. As long as the engine doesn't start consuming it's own oil, you should be fine.

If the no shutdown problem continues, try removing the bulb from the charge light. Removing the bulb will break the circuit from the alternator back to the ignition switch. The alternator power from the brown with yellow trace wire could be backfeeding to the ignition switch, powering the white wires with the key in 'off'.

I've had this problem before, which required a resistor to be wired into the circuit.

Well that's interesting. Another problem I'm having which I didn't mention is the alternator isn't alternating and the charge light is aglow. Sounds like maybe this could be the causing the shut off problem. Silly me pulled a known working alt. for a supposedly rebuilt unit. I'll be throwing the original back in and if I'm lucky, that will cure two if the current issues.

Watching that diesel run away was way depressing. Guess there isn't much you can do once they start consuming their own oil and take off like that. Thought mine was doing that once but it was the accelerator cable sticking. Freaked me out though.

The only thing you can do on a runaway is shut off the air supply. Industrial diesels sometimes have an emergency air flap positioned above the intake (or supercharger) that works (sometimes) What I was taught early on was to make one attempt to shut off the air (and not with your hand if you don't want to lose it) then run far away. The motor oil provides unlimited fuel, it runs to max rpm, and then the oil runs out. They've been known to explode like a hand grenade (I've seen that once on a 16V92 Detroit, not a pretty sight).

Disappointed because my box-o-parts from our host was missing the filler hose...Spoke with them today and the part is backordered for 3 weeks!! Oh well! I installed my K&N air filter, and dropped the engine breather into some petrol to clean it.

Finished the transmission rebuilt, install it in the chassis than the engine followed. A big long day of work.

My series 3 and I had a nice day out with CT rovers, (the first time its seen dirt since its rebuild...) About 20 minutes into the trail my front output flange fell off the transfer case, loosing most of my oil and my front wheel drive. After about an hour of laughing and wrenching it was buttoned back up and we enjoyed the rest of the day.

Had a fun weekend with my truck. I picked it up from Lynchburg where it was on summer vacation for the last few few weeks. I had a chance to play in the woods and finally stretch the winch line - that was cool.

I drove it the 2.5 hours home last night, it had some moments of bucking and violent hesitation - I'm thinking it is timing related since I could improve it by manually advancing the dizzy a bit on the side of the road. I'm also going to check the fuel pump and filters tonight...

Today I took off the canvas top, hoop sticks, windscreen and upper bulkhead of the lightweight. I then proceeded to drive to local restaurant for lunch. It may be close to a 100 degrees here, but as long as I kept moving the wind kept me cool. At this rate, I'll probably take off the doors and the side panels before the summer is over.

On a somewhat sour note, the bottom of my upper vent panel is Swiss cheese. I'll sand blast in a week or two to see how bad it really is. I'm crossing my fingers that I'll be able to weld some new sections my self...

                              Reassembly

Monday: compounded out all the dirt, mold and other crud that was on our roof. Removed all the old caulking/sealant along the roof drip rail and applied new sealant (it even came in Limestone color!)

                              Tuesday: remounted the roof rack.

Today: loaded up all the parts we've had at our house for the last 9 months to deliver them to Lamorna Garage where the final assembly of our 109 is underway. Target completion is this Friday, July 23rd!
