    How Necessary Are They?

How necessary are the boots that cover the slip joints n a Series drive shaft?
I just noticed that my front one has torn in two. I've replaced this one twice already in 3 years and I've lost track of the number of new ones I've put on the rear. Am I throwing my money away on something that really isn't needed?

Mine has the remnants of a boot still held in place by the hose clamps.

I think you're keeping after the greasing of those splines then they're not too necessary at all.
      Kind regards, Josh

Jim, I've found they work fine when new but most of the time they tear. When they tear they hold water and dirt which causes premature wear. I'd recommend getting rid of it and just grease the thing when ever you can.
