    Painting the Engine

    Hi
I'm a new user so I hope you understand some of my newbie doubts...

I'm starting to substitute some of the crank retainers so I'm also thinking about to start painting the engine.
1 - Where can I see an original one and which are the color codes?
2 - I think there are only tw colors correct? Black and the that frequently known as duck egg blue?

    Regards

Welcome! I'm glad you asked the question I'm curious too. My 59 is original and it is grey, my truck is mid grey, which I don't think matters. Maybe the year has something to do with it. Lets see what the more experienced have to say.

Google Dunsfold Land Rover. Look under their restoration section.

There is no such thing as duck egg blue. The color code is BSC101 which is Sky Blue. Correct. Black and blue. Series 2 club forum has the details on what was painted what.

Dunsfold has the paint for sale as do others on Ebay.

There were red blocks too but those are the later ones 5mb etc.

Duck Egg Blue appears to be a synonym for Sky Blue and it dates back to RAF documents in WWII, that is where the confusion I think emerges about that term.

        also fwiw:
Post-war British Army engine paint is often referred to as ‘Duck Egg Blue’ this is incorrect. The correct stuff is ‘Paint, Finishing, Heat Resisting, High Gloss, Sky Blue, BSC 101, Brushing, Air Drying, 8010-99-943-4730’ which comes in a 5 litre can. (Catalogue of Ordnance Stores & Ammunition section H1 (Part 1) Paints, Dopes & Varnishes, Army Code No. 13447, 1993). More recently 1 litre cans have been made available now described slightly differently as ‘Paint, Finishing, Heat Resisting, Sky Blue, High Gloss, BSC 101, Brushing, Air Drying, 8010-99-943-6189’. (Army Equipment Support Publication 0200-A-221-013,Painting of Service Equipment, 1998).
        1965 SIIa 88",1975 Ex-MOD 109/Ambulance, 1989 RRC, blah, blah, blah...

Clearly, I understand why they called it "Duck Egg Blue"....who would want to say "Hey, hand be another can of that Paint, Finishing, Heat Resisting, High Gloss, Sky Blue, BSC 101, Brushing, Air Drying, 8010-99-943-4730."

And to throw some more information open for debate...
Here in the states it hard to find the BSC 101...so, some of us use the americanized version of Duplicolor Detroit Diesel Green.

Here is what it looks like on a ford engine block...

            and the BSC 101

Unless I were doing a Concours restoration that Detroit Diesel paint is definitely what I'd use. Close enough for me.

Hold on now...don't get all excited. It's not what you think....
I just ripped it off from google images.

I painted my 2.25 Detroit Diesel Green but couldn't access my image account here at work. So, i had to use google image.

thread hijack - why would RAF paint all other non-fighter aircraft 'dull red'. This is a rhetorical question...unless someone knows the answer.

the aircrafts were not painted dull red or BSC 101...this is the color for the "red and blue roundels on the upper surface...etc.." or the insignia.

Well following a common theme with the British Military we did paint some PRU Spitfires pink.

                            paint

                            Ok, thanks for the indications...
Now I have another doubt: which parts should be painted sky blue and which are black?
                            Does anybody have photos?
                            Many thanks
