Finally did my shaft seals

well I took 2 hours yesterday and dod my selector shaft seals..
not really a big PITA, but just going through the motions was chore enough...

I must say, everybody was right.. what a silly design and O rings would prob be a better fit..
Im sure I will play around with some ideas before its time to do them again..

Quick question..
has anybody made some kind of access port to get at the gearbox's top fill hole..
seems like a much easier way to top off in between..
perhpas a 3" hole with a blaking plug?

My 73 s3 88" has one too.

My series one has a swing-away panel on the tranny hump just for this. Check the dipstick on the tranny and remove the cap for filling. Do it all from the comfort of the cab. As you know, not much better than checking it crawling on the ground.

By the way, I have tried fat o-rings. Marginally better than factory seals. Not worth it if this is the only job that needs doing on a tranny.

So that's what that big rubber plug is for. I've got a hoist in my shop (getting too old to crawl around on the floor) so that never entered my mind.

so i have noticed a bit since doing the seals that the tranny feels a bit looser when in gear...
Did i not adjust something correctly?


Its runs drives and shifts fine.. just feel its a bit jumpy in gear.

Did you do the seals the easy way or the hard way?
Easy way = use a split piece of hose and only have to remove the retainers.
Hard way = remove the selector shafts, take off the forks, install seals, then reassemble.

If you did it the hard way, maybe the selector fork(s) are not positioned properly.

Right, but the forks are supposed to be in a certain position on the selector shafts. The manual tells you where thet need to go.

i actually didnt see any other way for them to go on...
the centering bolt hit the groove exactly where it should have...
(prob the best part of the design IMO)
