Sounds like par for the course. The transmissions are noisy cantankerous things. You did not mention if you have an overdrive or not. 55mph without an overdrive is a bit too fast in my opinion.
My '65 has never had an overdrive and on the highway I keep it to 60. I do not see 55 as a problem.
What do you mean by 'whine'. Is it the transmission or is it the overdrive? My money is on the overdrive. Is it louder if the overdrive is in or out of overdrive?

Try running Red Line heavy shock proof gear oil in the gearbox, transfer case and overdrive, you will be surprised how much quieter it is and how it shifts better.

Some gear noise is normal, too much is not normal. How's that for vague?
Last weekend I drove about 200 interstate miles in my SIII. I've fitted an MGB tach and at 70-75 with OD on, I'm turning 3300 RPM. It sounds like a lot more and I've taken to wearing ear muffs on highway trips.
