Fairey Overdrive Noise

OK folks, I just installed a USED fairey overdrive that a friend gave me.
He mentioned that it was noisy and it is...There is high pitch whine when
you hit the gas after the overdrive is engaged.

The fluid level is fine and all the gears and bearings were clean with no
signs of wear.

I know these things are noisy but was wondering if there is a bearing or
maybe a Laygear that tends to wear most often?

Also any special gear oil that may reduce the noise?

Since they're not helical cut gears, they do whine. I use 130 weight in mine to cut down on the whine, but can't say it helps as it's been so long since I used 90 weight. A bad bearing would growl.

Yeah...I was going to do that and maybe overfill a little.
I will also check the level in the transfer case as well.

You did add oil to the fairey, right? They have a separate reservoir from the transfer-case, unlike some others.

By the way, when I switched to lucas 85w-140 <I think> gear oil, my overall gear noise dropped considerably. Probably due to the oil thickness, but what the hey.

Of course, I added 90w as per the manual.

The Lucas 85w-140 probably just thicker and
therefore more sound deadning.

Fairey would have probably recommended 130 or 140
if the weather in England was warmer at the time.

I have also lined the bottom of the box sitting on top of
the transfer case with Dynamat...it helps alot!

I've run Mobil1 or Amsoil since new in 1992.....

...with no problems / moderate whine. Also, the OD is perpetually overfilled because oil comes in from the transfer case.
I also removed the cheesey cotter pin vent and drilled & tapped for a wading vent hose made for the axles. Better venting and less mess.
109sixer is on target with the dynamat - I have one of those thick county floor mats sold by RN and it's a big help in the noise department.

I'm envious of you guys and your new fangled sound deadening. I have a few layers of wax oil over spray as my sound deadener and that ain't much.

Thanks for the Dynamat tip, 109sixer. I never even thought of it. I have some left over from a stereo install in my Subaru WRX, so I might as well put it to good use.

Dynamat is great...but don't get carried away. Besides being pricy, it impossible to remove. I only use it in places that I will not be painting
in the near future. Firewall and floor boards are goos examples.

I also came across another great sound deadening material. I found
several large anti-fatigue mats that are normaly made for commercial
retails spaces. You know, like behind the register at your local mall etc.
The stuff has industrial carpet on one side with 1/2" of foam rubber on
the bottom. It glues rather easily to doors panels and keeps the vibration
and sound to a minumun. It laso looks alot better than Dynamat.

I noticed that if I leave my hand on the overdrive lever and keep some forward pressure as I release the clutch, the overdrive gear will grab better and will not whine as loud.
I also need to change my OD gear oil to thicker Lucas oil.
