MOD 109 - Oil Cooler Adapter Question

I have installed a Military Oil Cooler on my Series IIa 109. My set up is the latest version shown in the options catalog. The vehicle has an oil light sender and an oil pressure sender so I am using a banjo bolt set up from our hosts that allows both senders off one port.
My question relates to the outlet port going to the cooler. The adapter can be orientated such that the outlet port is up or down. It would seem to me that in one direction the oil has not been filtered before it goes through the filter and in the other orientation it has been filtered before it goes through the cooler lines. Which is correct?

Have you got any pictures of what you're talking about?

It is critical to have the oil enter the filter assembly at the correct port on the filter adapter. This is usually set by the oil filter adapter orientation. Everything else is a secondary consideration.
