    Primary Pinion

Getting ready to install my tranny and noticed that there is side to side play in the primary pinion.. Should there be no play? Or am I being over cautious?

I have yet to see one that doesn't have play. I don't know if that's good or not. I've rebuilt them before and they still have play.

How much side-to-side movement? .020 -.030 or so is tolerable, but it's an indication your mainshaft bushing is worn. As long as your pilot bushing (in the flywheel) is good, you'll get some use out of it, but any more than that, and the mainshaft bushing is gonna give you issues, especially in 3rd. do you recall any shuddering when coasting in gear? If so, the pilot bushing is also probably worn.
