Is the tumbler inside different from a regular key/switch tumbler? I don't know the answer to that but someone on this Forum knows.

ie - could it be actually pretty simple to fix with a new easy to get tumbler?

Or is the problem truly with the big military switch

A military 6-way switch is for the lights and not your ignition. IIRC the ignition is just the same part as any civvy truck of the same age. What year is your vehicle?

On the IIa's the ignition on/off is in the centre of the 6 way switch.
          I think I have a good used one for $60.00 ....

My '70 2A ExMOD had a seperate 6 way on a small panel. The knob of the HL Sw. did not have a hollow center, it was smooth. The Ign sw. was seperate. Starter was activated by pushing a small black knob, center of the panel.

My '71 had the key in the middle of the switch. I had nothing but problems with the switch. Mostly loose connections, and a dead spot in it. Problems were with the lights though, not the starting circuit.

Unles you absolutely must have it original then I'd go along the lines of TerryS. Keep the 6 way in place for the lights and put in a seperate civvy IIA ignition switch.
