    Rear hub seal leaking

I am rebuilding wheel cylinders and found black gunk at center of brake anchor plate and am also going to replace rear hub seal. My quandary is, I have removed everything you can and want to know if I can replace the rear seal without taking out the races and bearings? Can I pry out the seal oil seal and fit the new one without taking out the outer race and bearings?

    Thanks

I am not sure why you would want to do that. The job is pretty easy and the seals are not expensive at all. If you are going through all that trouble to break everything down...take the five extra minutes a replace the race and the seals. Do it right the first time and you won't worry about it for a long time.

Yes, you can replace the hub seal without having to remove the bearing races from the hub. Remove the hub assembly, put it face down on the bench, remove the old oil seal, then install the new one. As stated above, replace the seal wear ring on the stub axle at the same time.

Got new bearings and races as well as some experienced help! I have all the gaskets and parts ordered and will reassemble as they come in. Thanks for the info as usual.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but what is this seal wear ring you speak of? I don't remember seeing this!

A little hint with the races....
Hitting it with a cold chisel will split it so that you can remove it easily. One or two hits will do it...you will see the crack easily.

Next, to get the races on. Take a hot plate (or a cooking pan) and lay the races on it. Let it warm up so that its a little hot to the touch...and then with gloves on..pick it up and slide on. Once it cools down it will snug into place.

I guess it is technically called a hub seal race:

I put the races in the freezer for 24 hours and they went right in with 3 licks from the hammer and bearing driver. Friend who works on CAT equipment suggested that as they use nitrous oxide to chill it down quick. The hub bearing was good so I saw no need to change it. Now I have brake issue which I will post as a new thread. Thanks for the info.
