Got the first couple pistons out of the block last night, and stared measuring things. So far the cylinders are pretty uniform at about 3.577-3.580. Spec is 3.562, so 020 oversize is 3.582, if I'm reading the manual right. I've never actually had a block machined, so I'm not sure what the guidelines are - would I have to go to 040 to get a good rebore and hone?

Take into acount the piston size, plus the piston-to-cylinder wall clerance specified in the book and see if there's enough cylinder left to bore plus hone to fit each individual oversized piston.
Oversize as little as you can get away with.--Mark

With those measurements you probably won't be able to stick to a .02 over. I haven't checked but you'll have to look to see what's available for pistons and rings. .03 over or .04 over? It will also depend on how the cylider is worn. They're never perfectly concentric to the original bore. it could be .015 oversize but off to one side.Jason

There's 040 pistons out there, but no 030 that I've seen. Someone is welcome to prove me wrong though.
At least it all explains why she was a little "clattery", even for a diesel.'67 109 NADA #413 - rebuilding w/ TDI & galvy chassis.Comment
