I think I read somewhere that the gasket Material between 2 & 3 is the likely culprit...could be wrong though.

Well I have the gasket kit from RN, so once my friend gets back we will dive in and see what we find. I will also check the compression on the other two cylinders after work tonight hopefully.

      Thanks,
      Robert

Well unfortunately after I had cleaned the cylinder head I discovered two cracks on the cylinders with low compression... I'm guessing that means I need to order a new cylinder head?

Is there anything I can do to save the $800 and not have to order a reconditioned cylinder head, or should I just start saving?

Probably not what our hosts want to hear, but why not just ask around for a good used head and have a machine shop "recondition" it? You'll be in it for a heck of a lot less than $800!

That's a good idea, I just want to make sure there is nothing I can do with the cylinder head I have... It seems to be in decent shape except the cracks. Can the one I have not be "reconditioned"?

Not unless you want to recondition another one real quick.

Finally got the new cylinder head on, new thermostat... The engine runs great, but I haven't gotten the guts up to really drive it far for fear of overheating again and needing yet another head.

Also, if there is gas coming out of the vent on the valve cover what would be the cause of that?

very bad rings or very loose valve guides/seals.

Gas as in gasoline or gas as in one of the three (or 5) states of matter?
