    engine w/o gearbox

anyone ever run their engine with the gearbox removed? I am chasing down a noise problem that I thought was gearbox related but want to rule out engine related issues. I have the gearbox/ Tcase removed.
Thinking of attaching a temp mount to back of engine wher bell housing mounts clamped to frame.
    thoughts?

Somebody here ran their 2.5 diesel on a test stand that they built prior to installing it. See the videos of it in this thread: http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=11375

PS. Wouldn't running the engine with the clutch depressed eliminate the gearbox as a possible source of the noise?

I would think if the engine mounts are solid then you'd have no issue. It's not generating much torque since there's nothing attached to it. Stick a piece of wood between the cross member and the clutch housing and have at it!

I've done it on a test bench before, no problems.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Would be significantly easier than removing a transmission.

yea I agree. I was convinced my problem was with gearbox prior to removal. Pulled gearbox, removed bell housing, inspected bearings and found nothing obvious as to what was making all the noise (see my " SIII touble" thread)
Now I'm a little stumped. Just want to confirm no noise w/ gearbox out.

We ran Jason’s (SalemRover) 2.5NA on the floor of my garage just sitting on its oil pan before installing it. the only issue was dodging the acorns flying out of the exhaust.

Good times, good times. Jumping back with the wires in my hand from the ping ping of acorns flying still gives me a chuckle.
