Julian's post about the lower dash got me wondering about a radio on the Series III. Was one offered as an original option? If so, what type of radio was offered? Where was it placed?
I would have thought it might have been a generic British Leyland radio from the parts bin (I used to have an original in my 73 BGT), however the depth of it (as was a subject of conversation in my original dash thread) was the same as a modern radio. I have yet to look to see if it will fit, however.
Anyone actually have one installed from new (in I assume that place in the lower dash to the left of the gauge pod)?

04 Freelander (sold, but still running strong)
2011 LR2 (Fuji White/Tan....per the wife )

I should hope it is marine grade what with all the leaks.
Ha! Funny but true.
I've never seen a radio option in any brochure (I've got a bunch) or supplemental parts book. I also have a reprint of an optional equipment catalog from around 1970 - nothing there, either.
I saw an optional equipment list for the Series II on Terry Ann's site that shows a "Motorola powered transistor radio" available as an option for $58. Maybe LR did away with this option for the Series III?
I bought my Ser III in 1998 from the original owner. It had the Motorola radio fitted - I can't find any pictures that show where it was mounted but I'll keep looking. It was a Motorola Model TM81A AM Radio and was a transistor model.
I still have it along with the owners manual and speaker. I have no way of knowing whether the radio was fitted as a dealer option at the time of purchase (one thing I didn't get was the original invoice) or if it was fitted at the factory.
I'm attaching a couple of pictures. Please excuse the dust on the radio - it has been sitting in my basement for many years.
This is the only picture I could find of the inside. It is not very clear but you will be able to see the radio to the left of the ash tray under the dash.
I also found the original spec sheet that listed all the optional extras. A radio was not listed but the radio interference suppressors pre-insatlled at the factory were indicating that the radio was probably a dealer option. Which makes sense given the different parts of the world these things were shipped to.
