    Series IIA Radiator Hoses

I just replaced my water pump this morning on my 1971 Series IIA ex mod 109. After it was all put back together I started to get a leak from two hoses. Looking to purchase the hoses I saw Rovers North sells an Ex-Mod specific bottom hose. Is it a true need for this hose or will a standard bottom hose for a 1971 IIA work?

Are both the upper and lower hoses leaking? When you put them on did they seem overly loose? Which water pump did you end up putting on a 7 hole or 9 hole? I've never heard of having to use a military hose. I did have to switch from a 2a upper and lower hoses to 3 upper and lower hoses when I replaced the radiator with one that came out of a Series 3.

      Hoses

I installed a 7 bolt pump (part number plc348) which was a match to what I pulled off. It appears that the middle and lower hose are the ones leaking. They do not leak when the vehicle starts up and is at idle. It only begins to leak when the RPMs increase. All hose clamps are tight on all hoses. The hoses fit snug going on but appear a bit worn. I have not identified any holes but planned on replacing them anyway due Tom their age.

        Radiator

This is pretty random but I did notice that the right side of my radiator gets a whole lot warmer than my left. On start up (cold) I placed my hand on the top of the radiator just to see how warm it got and how quickly (My temp gauge never worked which is my next project). Would their be a mechanical reason for that?

The tubes in your radiator are clogging, thus not allowing the warm coolant to flow through them.

If you have a digital laser thermometer, it can be fun to pinpoint the area in question. You'll need to have your radiator rodded out to correct the problem.

Take a peek down the filler neck hole once the coolant level is below the tubes, and you might see the buildup (probably calcium) on the surface of the tube tops.

            Good to go

All leaking stopped this morning after moving clamps around on the hoses and throwing a mallet across the yard. I still plan on buying new hoses for back ups though. The radiator is also cooling equally. Not to sure what made it work but all seems well.
