SERII blows fuse when fuel gage is wired in

how do I test for a bad fuel gauge? It seems that the brakes and the fuel gauge are on the same circuit. when there both wired up the fuse blows. Any ideas?

all new wiring, still positive earth. by the book.

I don't know if the original post was modified, Les, but I read the same thing--Series III. However, re-examining it closely, it says "SERII".

You might try disconnecting the brake light wires at the switch (make sure you wrap them up/isolate them) then see if the problem persists.
