Identifying a transmission using the serial no.

Can the year of transmission manufacture be determined by using the serial number stamped on top of the casing? Any websites list the serial numbers and corresponding years for Series Land Rovers? Anybody know what serial numbers the SIII transmissions used? Thanks.
