TedW, I'm just an end-user here too. I've read here that the SII gear boxes are stronger than the SIII's, so perhaps that might be it? Can't dispute 20 years of history. I had the full synthetic for a winter and had leaks and bad gear changes and finally a synchro spring failure (I don't think related) - the mainshaft nut also came loose. I fixed the spring, got a proper nut (with the proper tool to tighten), and put back in mostly petroleum 90w. It's been tight, smooth, and fine since then. I'd like to think that synthetic 90w would be fine, but past reading (about the brass parts and the original design intent etc.) and current experience has me where I am.

I'd kind of like to suggest that my experience is mostly unrelated to the root source of the oil; as an engineer, I believe in chemistry. Since the truck is 10k miles away, I'm not in any position to test anyway.
