Range Rover Classic '89 Sunroof doesnt slide back

My 89 RRC sunroof has gone on strike! It will go up ... and down as it should, and goes down for sliding back ... but it wont slide back.

I looked in the Haynes Manual for how to fix this ... well that was a waste of time.

Does someone out there have some step by step instructions of how to check cause and fix this please?

    Thanks

    Paul

An interesting note found on http://www.rangerovers.net/rremedies.html#sunroof points to earthing problems which may be the cause as I see my 5 wire plug wire harnes just inside the courtesy light cover has fallen apart ... on one of the black leads so I am now trying to track down a second hand one as guess what, these 5 way connectors are now obsoleted!!

However, if any one else has any good ideas I would still like to hear them while I am seeking the wire harness replacement.

Is it the just plug or the whole harness? If it's the plug, you really don't need a direct replacement part, any five wire auto plug replacement set (male/female) will work, just use the electrical codes from a manual (RAVE works well), cut the wires and reattach back in their proper place. And the black wires are usually the ones for earth (ground).

The plug on the wire harnes is clearly one that you could fit anything to ... provided it was the same male-female relationship, however you are somewhat limited by the configuration of the switch as to there only being one connector you can fit there. Seeing as they are the same switch to little harness as little harness to main harness, if you can get hold of the female you ought to be able to get hold of the male and so make it as original I would have thought?

I am currently investigating sources in the UK for the piece I need, but thanks for the reply.

Well to update I am still trying to obtain the short harness. In the meanwhile I got the roof open by roughly connecting the wires and pressing the switch while using my fingers on the front edge inside to help pull the roof back ... and it opened.

I have greased the tracks by squirting white lithium grease into the tracks and run it back and forth a couple of times but I ma not convinced this is a permanent FIX.

On the RRC you can also crank the roof back by hand using a socket on the motor nut - clearly a fail safe!

Ideas on a permanent fix to make the roof glide back and forth smoothly will be appreciated. Thanks

There used to be an "Official Land Rover" little key wrench for this in some of the tool kits (and some manuals actually show it in use) No stranger than my coming across an "Official Land Rover" wooden mallet from a tool kit (Loaned to me along the raod by a man in a Jaguar for smacking my Facet elec. fuel pump to get it going again on my Series truck). I don't know of any permanent fix that will keep it working, like any Rover feature it's: clean the electrical connections, clean and grease everything in sight, often.

Thanks - maybe that is all it needs! I am sure you are right.
