    Coolant Leak 93' LWB RRC

Hi folks, hopefully everyone had a great holiday season.

Looking for some advice, as I was driving the RRC to work the other day, I noticed a faint smell of coolant followed a few minutes later the coolant light.

I pulled over under a street light (it's winter, it's dark and I go to work early) opened the hood to notice what seemed like a minor coolant leak coming from somewhere. I quickly checked the overflow to make sure it wasn't emptied.

Since I still had coolant in there (although lower now) I made the decision to take it back home and take the (don't kill me) Jeep Patriot (the series is being worked on otherwise....).

It started up again fine, I drove home, parked it. Later in the evening I took out the trouble light (it's winter, it's dark still) as I wanted to see if maybe the upper hose had a pinhole leak or perhaps a hose clamp or somewhere around the thermostat etc........

but.....I couldn't get it started again. It just "clicked". There was a light soaking of coolant on the top side of the engine compartment but not excessive. Some of the leads had coolant residue, coil is dry, dizzy cap seemed to be dry. Alternator had coolant on it, starter and all leads seemed good (btw: starter was rebuilt about 2 months ago and has been working great), battery tests good and isn't soaked with coolant.

The overflow tank still has some but very little coolant in it. Could there be something with the coolant sensor that would prohibit starting? I didn't want to fill it up as I just want to start the truck and see if I could spot where the leak was coming from.

    No drips from underneath either.

Any suggestions or has anyone had this happen to them?

    Cheers,
    Thom

I would check your battery and hope that it didn't ruin the starter.

Just a quick update. I got the RRC running again. Topped up the coolant again. I can't find the damn leak!

I know it leaks but I can't spot any evidence other than the non-coolant related parts that got soaked. The upper and lower hoses are dry, I took off the fan shroud and there is no evidence of the rad leaking.

Anybody have any hints or comments?

Pull a spark plug to see if you have any white substances on the plug tips. You're looking for evidence that it might be leaking past the cylinders inside the engine.

Most service stations can test for pressure leaks inside the engine. It might be worth doing if you can't find an exterior leak.

        Good luck!

Have you checked the coolant bottle seam?
If the vehicle has the original black coolant tank, I would suggest changing this for the later opaque tank, either RNC007 Genuine or PLC007 ProLine.
There have been instances of the tanks seperating at the seams, sometimes quite dramatically.

Just to Update found a pinhole leak in the upper rad hose (it was so small it wouldn't show leaking until engine got warm and was under pressure.

It has now been replaced.....no leaks. However, As I was doing that easy job, I know noticed that my water pump has some play in it (isn't that noisy but a little upon start up) so I guess another job is in order.

Thanks to all for your help!
