    Head Bolt Torque Specs

What is the head bolt torque spec for a 1990 3.9L engine. I am just finishing a head gasket replacement with the newer type composite gaskets (upgrade using fewer head bolts.)
    Thanks

    Hello Poko,

Unlike the early Rovers using the steel gaskets... Later Rovers fitted a composite gasket using an interesting torque procedure as follows:

Stage 1: Tighten head bolts to 20 Nm
Stage 1a: Using a paint pen mark a line on all bolts perpendicular to the heads.
Stage 2: Tighten 90 degrees (paint marks should now be inline with head)
Stage 3: Tighten 90 degrees (paint marks should now be perpendicular to head)

Using the paint pen simplifies the procedure, this also ensures that no bolt was missed. ALWAYS replace the head bolts with NEW. These are a stretch-to-yield bolt that can only be fitted once.

    Have fun,
