Starting issues - 1993 RRC petrol

I have a 93 RRC petrol and I am having an issue with what I think is the key tumbler for the ignition. I have to hold the key to get the initial lightup of the dash, then when I turn it over, it starts fine, but if I let go of the key, it shuts off immediately. If I start it, but hold the key in place (so that it doesn't return on it's own, it keeps running.

Note: I have a replacement startup inhibitor, but have not installed it yet - as I noticed no reverse lights.

Note 2: I also have had to turn the engine over A LOT to get it to start.

Note 3: (a lot of notes, isn't it) I have only had the RRC for 9 months, but it has been almost flawless otherwise..
