    How much is it worth?

    Hi Everyone,

My wife and I are getting ready to start having kids so we are thinking about selling our beloved land rover. Its a 1974 series III in pretty good shape. I don't know a lot about cars and although I've had this for over a year now, I still don't know too much about it but I do know the frame is in great condition with a new rear cross member, the interior is in great condition with recent paint inside, the original heater works great, has a new starter and rebuilt solex carb. I was also told by the person I bought it from that he had rebuilt the engine a few years back. Its got power assisted brakes, land rover snorkel kit, safari top, and matching steel wheels (not pictured).

I do know there are a few issues with it. At some point in the past the previous owners used a lot of bondo on it and it is starting to pop off in a few places but the rover looks great at like 10'. It smokes a bit when you start it but quickly goes away when it warms up. The parabolic springs are sagging at the back on the drivers side but my land rover guy here in Asheville told me it was not the springs but the bushings. There is a hole in the gas tank half way up on the tank (so I just put half a tank in and it hasn't been a problem for me), the parking brake could use some work, the brake pedal has started to stick at times but this comes and goes, and there is a small crack in the windshield.

I'm sure I have forgotten something but do you all know what my rover is worth?

    Thanks

Probably only about $500. I'll buy it from you.

Already had an offer like that! Here are some pictures, I will put more up soon.
I forgot to mention it's a 2.25 gas engine. Both engine and transmission were taken out of a Series IIa (rebuilt) and then put into this one. I don't know why they did it, but they did it before I bought it. I also just replaced the muffler.

Could be anywhere from $2-$7k, but i would say closer to 4-5k, but i have not seen the truck in person to make the call. Just my opinion from looking at a bunch of trucks, and buying one recently.

If you're in Asheville, why not give Tony at 'Old English Cars' a call (1-828-890-9076). Perhaps he could give you an educated fair market value for your truck.
PS. if you put the SA decal on the back....howzit bru!

              Still for sale?

I am looking for a series II project to fully restore, is your still for sale? If so, how much would you take?

Though my eyes do hurt, and my screen is too bright, and the pictures are blurry, I'd still guess that it's a Series III.

Thanks for the interest, but like ThePhotographer said, it's not a series II but a III and I'm hoping to get between $8,000 and $8500 out of it. if I can't, I just won't sell it.

If the chassis is good and solid, the bulkhead doesn't have major rusty areas, and the engine runs smoothly (Be honest now) then I think you could get 8k for it. Over that and you start to get into galvanized chassis trucks and trucks that were fully restored in the past decade. The best thing to do is get really good pics taken of the whole thing, from top to bottom.

                    glwts!!

Based on Bostonian1976's thread you may have a tough time getting $8k. His truck has a great frame (yours is repaired), his is mechanically sorted (yours has suspension and potential engine issues), both have paint issues and yours seems to have some better bits (trop top, snorkel) but is a series III which is less desirable to some.

That's just my 2c, coming from someone shopping for one.

I'm starting to regret this question! I think I paid too much to begin with ($7,500) then I've spent about $2,500 in it plus a lot of time. I'm just hoping people like the 'good bits'

On a side note, has anyone seen the rovers on ebay? I feel like i've been pretty honest about my rover while lots of those ones have really cheap paint jobs and they paint everything in the engine compartments and the whole underside black...who knows what they are covering up, eh?

Again, just my 2ยข, but unless you do a full restoration on one of these trucks I would pretty much write off any investment that you've made since you purchased it. If you can get your initial purchase price back count your self lucky, IMO. A series truck shouldn't be seen as an appreciating asset so the fact that you've spent some time and $$ to enjoy the truck that you might not get back, eh, it is what it is. If I had to give one piece of advice for how to make the truck more sellable it would be to see if there's any way to sort the smokey startup issue. As a buyer that'd scare me a lot. I'm guessing you don't have documentation to suppor the rebuild so the idea that the motor was worked on, but still isn't running right is a big red flag. And if it's just the rear suspension bushings, get them sorted. It doesn't ring true in my head that recently upgraded springs would have bushing issues...
