Asking $34,500.
Located in Southern California, it is for sale as is, by owner, with clear California title. No trades. Cash or bank transactions only. Thanks.
This pastel green Series Rover seemingly has mostly original and nicely aged paint and character with a few small bumps mixed in. I honestly can’t go anywhere without getting a thumbs up, a comment on how cool she looks, or someone's family story about one.
It’s an extremely original 1971 survivor Land Rover Series IIA and was purchased/owned new by “Alaska’s #1”, being Hal Waugh… more on him below. She's not a modern almost self-driving smooth car. She comes with much character and personality, and is a 50mph max ride... which apparently seemed fast enough for the Queen of England who fully enjoyed them.
The truck has not been altered, welded on, cut or modified, it’s a very unabused, rare, survivor as photos show. Mechanically, various things have been refreshed (as expected for its age) and she hums along nicely. It’s perfect for around town, and local jaunts. The top even comes off for full open-air driving.
I love the provenance of this Series Rover and am ever hopeful the new caretaker may enjoy it as well.
--- BASIC IDENTIFICATION INFO:
Build Plant: Solihull, England (original British built truck for North America export)
Year: 1971 (not represented in chassis number, aka: VIN)
Chassis Number: 24440xxxG
244 = Model: Land Rover Series IIA, Body type: Basic or Station wagon, Wheel base: 88 inch, Engine: petrol, Model years: 1962-1971, Destination: Export, left-hand drive (LHD)
40xxx = Serial production number
G = Design: One significant design modification. (this suffix represents various changes/upgrades)
Engine Number: 30700406A
Selling Dealer: Rowland Motors, Seattle, Washington (this was likely the closest Land Rover dealer for Hal)
Delivery Destination: Ketchikan, Alaska
---ORIGINAL OWNER INFO:
- First sold to Hal Waugh (when living in Ketchikan, AK) via the Rover dealer in Seattle, WA… Rowland Motors.
- Hal was a strong proponent of ‘Fair Chase’ hunting and received license “#1” as Alaska’s first big game hxnter Master Guide. His number was officially retired when he passed away. He was known internationally and very well respected in his field simply as “#1”, and he spent much time lobbying for realistic hunting quotas and the fair chase hxnting practice. He was also known for sending his Winchester Model 70 rxfle to Weatherby to be rechambered for better hxnting. He named it ‘Big Nan’…and it’s become a legendary rxfle of sorts to professional hxnters. As I know, it last sold in the 2000’s for over $7k. I won’t even get into his boat building and musician skills! After Hal passed away, his wife Julie (aka: Julia) had the truck for several decades, and it ended up back in Minnesota where Julie grew up... thus her alma mater Bemidji State University sticker in back window. Note also the cool old REI Alaska side window stickers.
- As well, the Alaskan mountain ‘Mount Hal Waugh’ is named after Hal, and, he’s written/co-authored/and been featured in many books and articles.
- Sale includes three such books.
---TRUCK DETAILS:
- Included are Hal’s original truck papers: instruction manual, owner’s maintenance manual, Land Rover passport service booklet (with incredibly rare metal ID plate for the dealer to carbon copy over when serviced), Koenig winch paperwork (quite rare), ‘Rover distributors and dealers’ booklet, and lastly the original Land Rover ‘export version’ English edition document holder that all the above original items have been stored in the last 54 years. As a guess, I'd say 90-95% of old Series Rovers are sold without any of these wonderful, rare items. Ya, I'm a softie for vehicle history on the cars I own...
- No modifications, this truck is very factory original with of course the exception of expected various parts as/when needed over the years.
- All the glass is original, except windscreen glass may have been replaced. Otherwise all the original printed factory markings are on all other glass.
- Interior is in extremely nice original condition, complete with the uncommon original black interior trim panels. The only non-OG items I know of are new correct OEM style seats, and non-OEM seat belts. Dash has never been repainted (looks fantastic), no cut outs or holes, no added funky switches or gauges, and, there are no tears or damage in the heater box leather padding. It’s all remarkably well preserved and unabused.
- As well on interior, it has the original driver’s floor mat (wildly rare), tranny tunnel upholstery cover, very clean OG shiny steering wheel with no sun-fried bakelite crumbling off in your hands, OG rear cargo mat, and bench seats with Land Rover paper tags still on them, and topping it off… the headliner is in good condition with some expected age marks and just one, ~inch long tear above passenger but is otherwise unbelievably fully intact, no sagging, no seam splits… it looks great for its age.
- All original plaques are in great shape… for Locking Hubs, Tyre Life, Gear Selection, Chassis # (VIN), Date of Manufacture, 'Safety Harness’, Vehicle Emissions, Negative Earth, etc. No plaques have been removed or ‘redone’, they’re all original and 100% legible. Even the original engine oil filler cap still has a portion of its label on it… very uncommon and cool to see.
- Electrical has not been messed with and appears all original and works great.
- All lights work, except reverse literally just became intermittent… maybe the OG switch is going out(?).
- Both speeds of the original windshield wipers work well.
- All gauges work (except oil pressure), as do all gauge lights, including Hi-Beams, charge (low idle), cold start (choke), emergency flasher, etc.
- Never in an accident as I can tell, all metal appears original except possibly the removable/bolt-on door tops (or perhaps only repainted). I’ve not noticed any frame dents, repair or damage.
- Frame has the typical surface corrosion in places (not structural, no holes, just not all painted smooth and pretty). No areas look to have been cut, welded, worked on or replaced, etc. The frame, which could always be prepped and painted if desired, is solid and original.
- Bulkhead is very solid and free of the usual extensive bad rust at footwells. One footwell was repainted due to brake/clutch fluid leaking on it in the past. No areas look to have ever been cut, welded, worked on or replaced, etc. It’s good to go.
- Body panels are strong Brimabright aluminum and I can’t think of any corrosion locations.
- The driver side aluminum ‘rocker’ panel is dented below the lower door hinge. That’s the worst dent on her I can think of, and to me adds a little charm and story, like any other patina or blemish, so I left it as is. I love the untold stories of wear and patina!
-All the original galvanized trim is there, never painted/looks very nice, and all original spot welds are visible… no bondo!
- Original numbers matching petrol engine (30700406A see pics) starts first try in the morning with brief initial smoke puff at start-ups, not when driving along. It runs strong, idles, and cruises very nicely. Most recent compression check was 150, 145, 140, 135 (less than ~450 miles driven since then). I’ve had around 1,700 miles of fun in her the last four years around town, to the beach, local car shows, etc., and have done several ~1hr trips with no issues at all, but mostly local driving. She purrs right along.
- She shifts well through all gears and shifting 1st to 2nd is non-sychronized per original design. Since 1st is quite low, as a majority of owners do, I just set the synchro in 3rd or 4th and then start off in 2nd. Not much need for 1st gear where I live.
- Power brakes, original late Series IIA feature, stops her on a dime.
- Original uncommon Koenig winch, has been repainted and works well. I’ve run it but the oil seals needs replacing, which I have, but not gotten to doing (no city winching jobs). Thus, oil is drained and winch lever in cab is ‘locked off’ to avoid using it… I’ll show you, nothing complicated at all, just a precaution. In short, it works if you need it.
- Original WARN locking hubs (favored ones as I know it), with tires of full tread on the original nicely patina’d rims that match the truck.
- Also, the two-speed original heater works well, all pieces are in place but the in/out engine heater hoses aren’t hose-clamped to the motor (the two fittings are included. It’s a very simple fix if wanted, I’ll show you in person). I think about heat and I get hot, so I've never needed heat here in Southern CA.
- Comes with original jack and long jack handle, as well as original lug nut wrench for the larger late Series IIA lug nuts.
- Original engine hand-crank start handle also included. How many of your friends can hand-crank start their classics if the battery dies : )
- Small box of various parts included also, with original rare front license plate holder, front CA license plate, two spare turn signal lenses and other things. Amazingly, no holes have been drilled on front fenders (wings) for a license plate!
--- WORK DONE IN MY TIME WITH HER:
NEW…
- Engine oil pan removed and sump cleaned during oil change
- Steering box fluid changed to Land Rover One Shot grease
- Original carburetor disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt
- Brakes all around: dual master cylinder (DMC), wheel cylinders, shoes, springs, drums, front soft and hard lines, and, all backing plates repainted
- Brake servo (aka: booster/power brakes, factory stock item on late 2A’s transitioning to Series 3’s), only done since the DMC was done... keeping components in synch age-wise.
- Parking brake completely rebuilt to function as new
- Clutch master and slave cylinders
- Prop (drive) shafts and differential seals
- Exhaust manifold, full exhaust and muffler
- Alternator
- High-torque starter
- Hazard (emergency) flasher unit
- Fuel sending unit and gasket
- Voltage stabilizer (for accurate fuel gauge reading)
- Side ‘marker’ (light) rubber seals
- Others small things
This is the original sport utility vehicle with a notable provenance, and just the right amount of character and patina. It’s not fast (has the aerodynamics of a cinder block), and it’s not perfect… but it’s not been neglected and is a rare, very original, well preserved, unaltered example. It’s the foundation of today’s Defenders, and influential to the modern styling of Broncos and G-Wagons.
It’s literally a timeless ride and is ready for its next caretaker. The finger points, comments, and smiles per mile are plenty... I just wish I still had enough space for it!
Yes, it's available. PLEASE don't message asking if it is. Listing will be removed or edited when sold. Sorry, no trades.
