For Sale: The Goat, 1973 Series III coil conversion
Started life as a 1973 Series III SWB. Truck was converted to a coiler by East Coast Rover in 1996 with a new galvanized Designa chassis. I acquired the truck in 2005 after a period of somewhat neglectful ownership and proceeded to get it back to top condition. EVERYTHING below the chassis has been replaced, the complete suspension, axle housings, axle internals, differentials, hubs, brakes, engine, transmission, transfer case, and prop shafts. It was converted to power steering by Matt Browne at Overland Engineering in 2006 and then converted to a Daihatsu 2.8 liter turbo diesel using a Precision&Conversion adaptor in 2007. In the fall/winter of 2009 I undertook and almost complete disassembly of the truck to repair bulkhead rust. Matt Browne once again rebuilt the bulkhead to new condition using galvanized repair panels and door posts. The entire lower half of the bulkhead in essentially better than new. The bulkhead and rest of the truck was then repainted by myself and a friend using PPG Epoxy primer and Gillespie Coatings Lusterless Desert Sand 686 paint. No bondo was used anywhere. An extra unopened gallon of the paint will be included with the sale. While the truck was apart I changed the timing belt and the glow plugs in the engine. Truck gets 24MPG in mixed driving.
Going from the ground up:
5 285/75-16 Interco SSR tires with plenty of tread, never patched or plugged.
30MM wheel spacers to improve stance and turning radius, the vehicle is a pleasure to drive on tight trails
Range Rover Classic pre abs brakes, 4 wheel disc, dual circuit
Axle housings were sourced from clean discovery series 1 and painted with POR15 and topcoated
HD tie rod and drag link
Rear axles are Great Basin Rover 24 spline HD shafts
Rear differential is an ARB air locker with 4.75 ring and pinion
Front axles/CV’s are Rovertracks HD Longtracks units developed with Longfield, strongest setup you can buy
Front differential is an ARB air locker with reverse cut 4.75 ring and pinion
ARB compressor is the new style compact mounted in the tool box under the drivers seat
Front shaft is a Discovery shaft
Rear driveshaft is a Tom Woods double cardon shaft rebuilt this spring with new u joints and centering ball kit
Front radius arms were replaced with clean set from a Discovery 1 and POR15’d and topcoated and installed with new bushings and bolts
Rear trailing arms are custom length Rovertracks units to set proper rear driveline angle, no vibes, with new bushings
Pan hard rod and bushings replaced with new unit
Rear A arms, ball joint and chassis mounts and bushings were replaced with new units off of a CKD vehicle from Rovers Down South

Front springs are OME 761 front shocks are OME N115
Rear springs are NRC4304 Range Rover Classic police Spec springs, tall linear 170lbs./inch, flexy and give a smooth ride offroad, I found OME springs too stiff for the rear. Rear shocks are OME N27 with Safarigard lower mounts, EE lower spring retainers and Overland Engineering upper retainers.
Transfer case in an Ashcroft Hi Ratio transfer case, the diesel has no problem at all with the higher Hi ratio, installed in 2007
Transmission is a NOS late Santana Series III installed at same time as diesel engine. Santana built land rovers under contract in spain and made a 6 cylinder petrol and diesel version of the old 2.25 4 cyl. This box was designed to handle that increased power. The Daihatsu is rated at almost the exact same numbers.
Engine is a lo miles(kilometers?) Daihatsu 2.8 liter turbo diesel sourced from a Daihatsu Fourtrak, a popular SUV in the UK. It is a direct injection diesel with a Nippon Denso VE pump, glow plugs, IHI water cooled turbo charger, vacuum pump on the rear of the alternator for brake boost. A remote mounted oil filter is used to clear the bulkhead and a custom exhast manifold was welded up to reposition the turbo for clearance. It is rated at 101bhp at 2400 rpm and 170 lb. ft. of torque at a low 1700 rpm. This motor has an excellent reputation in the UK for going to very high mileages and parts are readily available. It has NO electronics. Custom 2” exhaust with Magnaflow flow through muffler. I will include the full maintenance and overhaul manual for the engine on CD.
The steering box and column are all Land rover parts and work beautifully.
The seats are SPARCO EVO XL mounted on Sparco brackets adapted to the seatbox with strengthening strips of aluminum, they are much safer than the old lo back seats and really support you especially on the trail.
Modern inertia shoulder belts were installed by ECR.
A genuine Safety devices roll bar is mounted in the rear and bolted through to the frame
A powertank bracket is mounted to the inside rear passenger side of the tub
A 50 caliber ammo can is bolted down on the passenger side of the tub, I was going to replace this but it just works so well
Door seals were replaced upon reassembly and defender style seals were used
Lower door frame channels and rear brackets were replaced with new galvanized pieces
Rovers North Mt. Mansfield heater
Front bumper is a Rockware unit with 2 shackle brackets and a Superwinch Rock95 winch with 50’ of 3/8’s line
Rear bumperettes are Equipe defender units
Both front bumper and rear bumperettes and radiator support were stripped, hot dip galvanized and then powder coated black as a single process by Hubbel Galvanizing , http://www.fortressfusioncoatingsinc.com/
Fuel tank was replaced while truck was apart with a custom fabricated stainless steel tank with proper fuel return tube, never have to worry about that again
Dixon Bate swiveling NATO pintle hitch on rear
Mantec raised air intake
Black canvas Exmoor trim top with complete hoopset and a full black hardtop with new window tracks are included, hardtop has utility lamp on rear corner and dome light both with bullet connectors to wiring at top of windshield frame
Every nut and bolt that was removed was replaced with either the correct galvanized fastener or Grade 8 hardware where necessary
