Wiring for a Winch

I have a rather large winch that came with my 60 Series 2 SWB Land Rover. It has one red wire prob a #4 that is meant to go to the positive side of the battery. It was not connected when I got the truck but it works and I would like to hook it up. I would imagine the positioning of the switch is important. I am thinking about using a battery cut off switch w/ key as a switch. I would also imagine that it should be fused as well. What type of fuse set up should I use?
I can provide pics if that will help, but any electrical advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thx

When I wired in my Warn 8274 I used a Cole Hersee 2000amp disconnect (PN 75908). I like this switch because it rests in the off position and snaps into the on position. No worry about battery drain.

I soldered some ends to some old welding cable and ran that from the battery to the switch, which I mounted to the top of the breakfast. I didn't bother with a fuse.

If you add a cutoff switch (recommended) then I don't think you really need the fuse. I mounted my C/H switch so it pokes up on top of the radiator panel. All I do is open the hood a bit, reach in, turn it on and close the hood. Out of sigh, out of mind and easy to access.

I found the Series 2 in about 3 ft of bushes. It had been there for many, many years and the winch and huge bull bar bumper w 2 jerry can holders was original so I took it apart and cleaned it and it works great. The winch didn't have a switch so that is why I was asking how to connect it. i will do a cut off switch as you suggested and mount it like yours. All still a work in progress, but the truck runs amazingly well and have driven it a bit w no brakes or running lights.

Winch says Jack & Heintz Co. I found JAHCO online it was or is a airplane manufacturer in the UK. Pretty old school so I had to keep it.

That's a very interesting winch. Do you have more photos?

I am confident that someone hand-built this one, but I could be off the mark. The motor and attached planetary drive look to be aviation-grade.

I will take a few more, but I suck as as photographer and they always seem to download upside down. There is a lever that allows it to turn freely so that you can pull out the cable. Once engaged the motor pulls well. A friend gave me a new metal cable so I will use that for now. The entire brush bar, winch and jerry can holder looks hand made and very beefy. I wonder if it was used as some kind of tow vehicle.
